Sprite Movies Declining in popularity?

Posted by VicHD - August 20th, 2008

Well, after Sprite TV 3 was submitted yesterday, something has been on my mind lately.

I've been reading comments from other flash authors Who I worked with in STV3 and they seem to touch the topic about Sprite Movies not being as popular as they used to. This bugs me because ever since I came to NG Sprite movies were, and still are, an inspiration for me. It was thanks to these flashes that I was introduced to this site in 2002 and most of you these days are now deciding to turn your back on them because of "overused jokes" "unoriginal content" and "boring Mario flashes" for example.

Guys, sprites aren't the problem here. USERS NEED TO BE MORE ORIGINAL! If you give a flash author the right ideas and the right amount of time to work on a project (whether it be sprites or real flash), you're going to get something original and inspiring even. It doesn't matter if you work with sprites or not. The reason I work with sprites is because I want to express myself with a sense of nostalgia and thank the gaming companies in my own personal way by making stuff like this.

I can draw, that yes, but I'm no way near as talented as the top flash authors here and I don't want to be criticized for stealing someone else's art style. I prefer to be known for my Ideas and stories, not just my flashes. I watch all different types of flashes because I'm more open minded.

anyway, what I'm trying to say is that (if this topic is really true) I still encourage sprite animations, old and new. It's great for amateur and advanced artists because it helps you understand the basics of the program after every submission. There's no need to diss sprite movies because of lame jokes. I'll keep working with sprites until I decide if they're not fun anymore. You guys will not force me to destroy something beautiful here, though most haters have a habit of doing that.

I want to see If i can Ignite that fire of inspiration back into most of you guys. That's a goal that I want to fulfill here.

Update: Looks like this tuned into such a delicate subject for me to talk about. Please quit with the hateful comments. I'm not here to spread hate. Like Tom Fulp said, "Newgrounds isn't a place for you to be a total asshole."

Comments

true alot of people keep refering to the same jokes like Mushrooms arnet suppose to make you grow...

Some of em are actually good like refered, but some are just wrong...
I hope Volkain5 and I will make a very good jokes for our Sonic Mishaps.

My fav so far is the scene Crossoverloaded.

Anyway I have alot of good ideas for Flash movies even my own crossover series that will probaly be as good as Super Mario Bros. Z, but ok I just plainly suck at animating and flashing and also making good effects like that, but the storyline will be great and also the battles.

In conclusion there are alot of good ideas out here like mine, but some of us suck in animating. Try asking some people around for idea's and help out.

Amen, man. When I 1st came to newgrounds, I always enjoyed the sprite movies. Sure, some were not that well done, but it still was always interesting what new ideas some people had for it. Heck I made this account for the sole purpose of leaving reviews for some of those (And quite a few other) movies. I do not think spriting is delining in popularity, and while I may see the same joke over and over, usually there are new jokes added into it. It may be hit and miss, or it might be pure gold, or might just be pure crap.
The point is, sprite movies shouldn't be decreasing in popularity, and that I too encourage new ones too be made.

You are absolutely right i love sprite movies and the fact that people are staring to like it less is because what you said you need to be original and sprite movies are fun so keep going at it and also good luck with finishing four swords misadventures 6 dont give up!!!!!!!!

Sprite movies suck you stupid faggot

"Newgrounds isn't a place for you to be a total asshole."

I didn't say that. Tom Fulp has stated this for years you know.

Its already unoriginal. Make your own art.

basicly everything you said was almost exactly wat i think. i was a fan of sprite as soon as i seen my very first sprite film. since then ive been wanting to make some of my own i now get the chance to and people dont like sprites anymore. so all those years of desperstion and all the time i spent on flash to make a sprite film wont be worth it anymore becuz sprites are now disliked. people say it takes no skill its unoriginal becuz you dont draw the sprites. there are too many dbz crossover sprite films out there and stuff. well if i drew every sprite pose and i didnt make any diferent pose, then i make 2 flashes with the same joke one in sprite form and one in drawing tell me would it be one be funnier than the other. i dont think so

I personally like Sprite movies, most people that use Sprites use it for a reason, like they cant draw very well or are trying to make a point about old 8 bit graphics. It shouldn't matter whether people use sprites or not it soley remains on how the author uses it. Im glad people still use and enjoy making sprite flashes because I think its cool to see how the sprites are animated or put into a situation.

Keep up the good work and hope you continue to enjoy using Sprites.

I also don't get the fact for people saying: you only use sprites since its simple. Sure its easier since things are drawn out for you, but then again you also take away the freedom of going everyway with your work, since sprite actually limit how you are going and changing sprites won't mean it will come out the best.

Basicly I think people are losing interrest in sprites since alot of people are only wanting to see SMBZ ep and since Alvin stopped alot of spriters as well, people are like SPRITING is dead.

I partfully blaim Sprite-a-Day as well. They made it seem too easy and every day was a sprite collab... basicly then you lose interrest and drain it,

If you want to be original with pixel stylized art, go create your own characters and stories from scratch.

You can't really be "original" if you're using pre-made video game sprite sheets.

I hope THIS particular trend does die out, it's fucking awful. Though I'd love to see people get into ACTUAL pixel based animation.

Hey, nothing personal dude. I don't want to spread hate around here. I'm only concerned about a certain topic, that's all.

Your goal should be to make a sprite movie that people will enjoy despite it being a sprite movie, or like my goal, making a sprite movie that even Rtil will enjoy.

i agree man the sprite movies is what got me into newgrounds and i love seeing them in addition to seeing peoples original artwork i mean peolpe think authors are lazy because they just use sprites but it takes time to work on the animation using that sprite its no walk in the park. i'll love sprite movies no matter what xD

Sprites have declined a lot in popularity since Randy Solem, Bigfoot, Alvin Earthworm, and other sprite animators stopped making movies--or at least slowed down a whole lot. Psycosis is the only sprite animator I can think of right now that is trying to make a new sprite movie all the time.

I used to animate sprites as well, but now I want to make more original things, and nobody says sprite movies take any effort. That's obviously not true, but now I feel that if I want to make a videogame parody at all, I should try to make it a drawn movie. It may lower the score but at least it feels really good to finally have it finished.

Harse words comming from Rubber...
3rd comment but here it is:

Basicly I enjoy a sprite movie abit more then an Awsome Movie.

In my opinion Sprite movies may use sprites from video games but thats what I like about it. When people draw the charaters they mostly try to make some joke about em in the drawing or just look very odd to me then the orginal sprite.

Rubber I get you are angry and people should pixelate self, but I don't think you want it to die out. Sure things liek Pheonix Wrong was taking it to the worst level, but some movies are pretty decent like Hadoken's movies.

Sprite movies just keep a fresh variety of things to me. Trust me that some movies would just be considered awfull without the actual sprites.

Ignite inspiration with sprites? Give me a break.

Sprite movies are one of my favorite type of movie.
But wen someone use stolen sprites (mario, sonic, cenarios, etc) this really lost some points in my final rating. Original sprites are the best thing in the world. But Its not because someone uses stolen sprites that i gonna rate low, if the movie is still very good i am still gonna vote a 7, 8... But its rare to me vote a 9 or 10 in a movie like that.

Sprite movies can't really be "original" in most cases. Although using them in flashes can be nostalgic, it doesn't really much of a lasting effect on the imagination. Most people start out with sprites. Nearly 100% of people use Mario and Sonic sprites in a DBZ-style type of comedy or fighting flash. This is why most people hate anyone that uses sprites. It's also why it seems that they're dying out more quickly. Now there are way to use sprites and still be original. I am not talking about ripping sprites, I am talking about complete, custom sprites. There have been many flashes that use sprites, but are made completely from people's imaginations. Rtil is the most notable in this style of sprites. He has made a few flashes that use sprites, but are of his own creation and imagination. This style is the direction that sprite movies should be going. People are trying to revive sprites by doing countless sequels and remakes of sprite flashes that don't need them. Sprite TV is a good example. I did see Sprite TV 3 and I have to say that it was what I expected it to be. Lame, overused jokes using Kirby, Mario and other generic sprites. People can decide on what ever use they want to use their flash skills in, but sprites just don't appeal to most people anymore. When I was younger, even I enjoyed sprite flashes and generic video game parodies. That was when they were "fresh" and somewhat new to the flash dynasty. Now people's standards have gone way up since that age. No one really wants sprite movies anymore. Pretty much every user on Newgrounds just wants to see endless, moronic video game parodies. If you don't believe me just look at Egoraptor's newest movies score... All in all, people can choose what they want to do with their creations, but eventually every style of sprite and video game parodies will be hated or ignored.

ummmm well a good step towards originality would not be doing sprite flash

I lyke SPITE movies bcos i can recignize the charicters and it mayk me vhote 5.

Oh my. I love drama. :D

Meh, ignore the haters, there are always some around in all parts of the net, so they aren't that important... larger site = more haters = more haters seen and heard around...

I, for one, still love sprite flashes, especially if they're well made and are related to a game / other thing I love... ok, some jokes may be overused, but as long as the flash is good, most people don't even care or notice such little "flaws"...

I encourage everyone, if you want to do something (sprite flashes or whatever else) and know that you really want to do it good, just finish it and look at your own work, both while working and once it's finished.
It's something you (at least partially) made and should be proud of. There are many people who just hate anything without reason and wouldn't even be able to do a work of the same quality, you are able to create. So the only logical conclusion is to not even look at them and rather check out the constructive comments and suggestions to make your work even better...
And if people really see reasoned flaws, once YOUR work gets improved with their or other's suggestions, even those haters might convert...
