HadoukenDude

Underrated, Overlooked.

Posted by HadoukenDude Oct. 1, 2009 @ 1:02 AM EDT

Over the past few months I kept noticing reviews in and out of Newgrounds saying that my FSM series is "underrated". If people really think that way, I don't mind at all. In fact, I actually have to agree with those comments. However, I've also noticed over time that I'm losing my audience for some reason and I find this very odd.

I mean, I dedicate my time to develop the story the way I want it and entertain my audience. Fans ask for more episodes and I give them more. However, every time I make a new episode, it gets even less views than the previous one and I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. If people supposedly like this series, then why are less people viewing the latest ones? Do viewers really have short attention spans these days or are users rejecting it cause it's a "sprite movie"? I don't want to get into that topic all over again... it blew up in my face twice before.

Let me give you a clear example of what I'm talking about: if I compare the views from ep. 5 and ep. 6 respectively, It's clearly noticeable that roughly 103,000 viewers either missed out or wasn't interested in episode 6. Seriously, so much demand for new episodes and in the end I'm busting my ass for nothing? What the hell? People ask for more, I give them more, but I get less in return. It doesn't seem fair, does it?

Just to point this out, I'm not the kind of person to make weekly or monthly episodes, even if I wanted to. I don't have the time for that, considering the fact that I'm studying for a career in telecommunications and that itself is time consuming. That and sharing a computer with 4 other family members can be a total pain in the ass sometimes, but there's not much I can do about it.

As for ep 7 well, I'm still developing it and I want to have it ready before the end of the year, but I fear it might end up sharing the same fate as ep. 6: critically acclaimed, yet completely overlooked. I'm not really sure what will happen with this one.

Overall, I sometimes feel disappointed and maybe even a little frustrated by this. I don't know whether to continue the story or let it phase out unfinished into oblivion like other flashes have over the years, but if you guys REALLY want this series to continue, spread the word about it. People are really missing out on something interesting here and I don't want to let all this effort go to waste.

I don't think Ep6 was on the frontpage which would of had a huge effect on the views, but anyways I don't think it's an attention span problem, but the problem is with people tending to forget about the upcoming movie or even what happened in the series after a long period of time. Maybe post teasers or trailers of Misadventures or even short Misadventures animations. Just to refresh people's minds about Misadventures. But I'm no expert at this, these are just suggestions.

Oct. 1, 2009 | 9:33 AM HadoukenDude responds:

Hey man. I understand what you're saying here, but If I remember correctly, FSM 6 was on the front page for about a week and it only got 100k views at the time until it was replaced by another flash.

As for posting teasers and trailers for the episodes, I did that on youtube too. Twice with ep. 6 and once with ep 7. It didn't really help much for ep. 6 though, but I'll think about posting another clip for the upcoming episode.
Thanks for commenting.

Telecommunications? I think my dad did that in the military.

Please enjoy the remainder of your twenty-four hour span of time. - ( Have a nice day )

Oct. 1, 2009 | 9:45 AM HadoukenDude responds:

I go to a military university, so it makes sense. The university that I go to is open to the people and apart from getting a career you also get a military rank once you graduate. I'm already halfway done with it, meaning I got 2 more years left until I'm finished.

Oct. 1, 2009 | 6:32 AM FourSwordsKing says:

Hmmmm....I'll agree with SamIam on this one. It didn't make front page, which maked people wondering "What the fuck happened to FSM?" and all your fans just gave up after that. Anyway, I'll try spreading the word, but don't expect a lot. There's already people out there watching it as there is. You should be happy to have any viewers at all, otherwise, this series would probably in the dust right now.

Oct. 1, 2009 | 9:50 AM HadoukenDude responds:

I do appreciate the fact that I have loyal fans, though my main concern with the series is the overall interest from other viewers.

And again I should clarify that FSM 6 DID get front page for about a week after it was released, so that wasn't the problem.

Oct. 1, 2009 | 8:43 PM swanandrew says:

Just ignore them. They're being jerks.

Oct. 2, 2009 | 4:24 PM SeriousGuy says:

You know what? People don't care about your flash because they started to care about more significant and important things in life! They started to care about the New World Order and what will happen to all our lives in the near future! If you haven't left your rock under whom you are living, then maybe you will never learn about the fact that also in the near future [probably this year] the internet will most likely be shut down by our friend Google who works for the elite, too! And then it's bye bye with viewers and audience of your flash because they couldn't even watch it anymore even if they cared a shit about it.

Sorry for being so rough but I know your point: you are a flash creator and became an attention-seeker without even recognizing! That happens to many people and happened to me as well in the past, but I let my personal desires go for a higher sake! And you probably didn't even consider the easiest and most simple thing: that the people maybe are watching your flash on YouTube rather than on Newgrounds because NG is shit! It's the perfect home little baby kids and trolls, and the mods aren't reliable!

How many people had an invention and posted it on Google Project 10to100
and no one cared from Google nor in real life no one wanted to make a patent for them? Those inventions are far more important than some stupid flash movies, you know? But ok,your flash isn't stupid,it's entertaining to say the least! But the idea of wanting more audience for such an unimportant thing is in its own stupid and naive! Because people like to ignore higher sakes and rather care about themselfs, they became selfish and thus all the wars began in the world known to mankind!

Take another perspective of your life and your position in the world, then your
rant will become meaningless! But I do respect the variety of characters the nature gave to people,so it's understandable that one or the other becomes like this...

Oct. 3, 2009 | 1:50 PM HadoukenDude responds:

OK, so maybe I am sounding a little needy in this rant, I'm aware of that. I am also aware of the fans that are watching my flashes on youtube instead of visiting NG, every noob has their excuse on this topic.

As for the rest of your rant, that was kinda harsh. However, it doesn't surprise me when you have a user name like that.

Oct. 2, 2009 | 8:14 PM Kimes says:

I can't accurately say what is the problem. But my best guess your audience, which presumbly is made out of students, has simply no time or have forgotten you. With the production span of your animations ranging from months to years, it is highly possible. What is also posssible that you have an highly variable audience, not the types that hang around but just those that look what you got at the moment and than go on. another possibility is that people dislike the way the story is going. And maybe it's just the financial crisis hitting your audience.

But you shouldn't forget you also have a loyal core of followers (me included). We love the work you do to varying degrees and we're all watching in enjoyment the completion percentage going up. Don't feel bad that you seem to have a smaller audience, you have reached hundreds of thousands of people. and you still do. it is not the scale of your audience, it's not like your a democratic party trying to get into the goverment, you are an hardworking entertainer. If you have something to amuse us we will laugh and we will give an aplause at the ending, having made a good memory and added another animation to our library.

Oct. 3, 2009 | 1:56 PM HadoukenDude responds:

Thanks, that's very constructive of you to say it that. There are lot of possible causes to this situation and sometimes finding a way to solve things is completely beyond my control.

I just hope that the other viewers who forgot about this series remember where they left off and continue to enjoy the story for what it is. After all, I am making this series for the people who want to see it.

Oct. 3, 2009 | 5:58 AM ssjarce says:

you know some people are stupid and don't know what they want. But i know that FSM series is the funniest series i saw and i show and tell my friends about it

Oct. 3, 2009 | 1:52 PM Eisteetrinker says:

What Kimes said,
plus it's possible that some fans are actually showing FSM to friends and family. that alone would double the viewer-count if everyone shows it to only one; I did like 5 times. So it's only natural that older movies' views go up while newer stay relatively down coz' many people watching together.

Oct. 3, 2009 | 2:29 PM link3740 says:

DUDE DON'T DO IT! This series is one of the series giving me reason to come on newgrounds anymore. I've been wanting to do flash and i need another idea. i am definitely doing Batman (second choice) and Devil May Cry (first choice).

Oct. 3, 2009 | 4:35 PM BanzaiBoo says:

I believe the problem is that users are looking on youtube instead of Newgrounds. Plus, FSM 6 hasn't made it into the Zelda Collection in the Video Game Parodies section, so people who only look in that instead of going directly to your flash submissions page would miss it. Plus what Kimes and everyone else has said before me. I hope your future submissions of FSM get a higher view count, but in the end, you still entertained your audience, and no matter how small the audience is, that is a monumental achievement from my perspective.

Good luck Hadouken
May the Tri Force Be with you.

Oct. 8, 2009 | 9:21 AM HadoukenDude responds:

Yeah ,I also noticed that FSM 6 hasn't made it in the Zelda collection yet.
Now that is weird once you think about it.

Thanks for the comments I'll keep this series going somehow, someway.

Oct. 3, 2009 | 9:17 PM Pianogod says:

Please don't stop on something that you have been working on. I hate it when people don't finish their work and leave it incomplete. I'm the kind of person who wants to see something through the end, no matter what happens in it. So please don't give up on this. Continue working, and soon you will have a lot of audiences viewing your flashes again.

Oct. 4, 2009 | 1:13 AM Bodenking says:

Don't worry, my friends will hear about this, even if they don't want to. Your series will not share the same fate as Firefly.

Oct. 4, 2009 | 11:23 AM SenorChups says:

Think of it this way. Would you rather have a ton of views and people say FSM is garbage and a waste of a few minutes, or slightly less people watch it and praise it?

Oct. 8, 2009 | 9:16 AM HadoukenDude responds:

I wouldn't mind having 100k or 200k more views in each episode. I've been in previous situations where I made flashes that reached over 700k views and with mixed results so I know what you're talking about.

Though I appreciate the positive response from the loyal followers of this series, I feel like I'm being largely ignored by the rest of the users. If more viewers mean more harsh critics, the only thing I can do is accept their opinions no matter how harsh they are.

Oct. 4, 2009 | 11:45 AM Sharak says:

Oh noes! You can't stop! What about the people who are waiting with excitement for your next episode??? It can't end like that! Please think it over again. Pretty please!!!! T_T

Oct. 4, 2009 | 2:32 PM badger4528 says:

PLEASE CONTINUE WITH THE SERIES! IT IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AWSOME!
PLEASE!

Oct. 4, 2009 | 3:11 PM sprinx says:

you have a great series...don't forget that =D you may have a 103,000 viewer gap between ep 5 and 6 but in SMBZ theres a 1,000,000+ gap between eps 6 and 7 soo don't feel too bad. I encourage you to keep making this series but if you stop I understand.

Oct. 4, 2009 | 5:42 PM Bladewaker says:

Wow, to think... (well, maybe I don't want to), all that work and no one appreciated it? That's harsh, but there is truth in that. I just hope you get the admiration you deserve, cuz I mean, this is one of the best series I've seen thus far. I really think that you should continue this series and hope for the best! I'm praying for your success and that you'll get the thanks you deserve.

Oct. 5, 2009 | 3:54 PM djb426bg14 says:

it's understandable, it's just that even though each episode is more of an awesome ass kickin movie, it's as you've said a "sprite movie". it's great but something similar but totally different needs to be called out, such as something not pixel but with the same ideas in mind. witch is why many other great sprite makers stopped making flashes-there how they call it " out of contrast". BUT I would be possitively certain a "new" method of your movies would be great.

P.M. me on what your thoughts are!

Oct. 7, 2009 | 8:49 AM Osuka says:

Dude, I have this question for you

-You feel good/fun making this FSM episodes?

If the answer is Yes, just keep doing it. The most important thing of a project is if you feel good with it, if you have fun making it. And dont think that you are loosing your audience, the people made a FSM Forum, A FSM FORUM, that means that you have dedicated and loyal fans.

So dont get depressed, if you have fun making FSM, Just Do It

Oct. 7, 2009 | 8:52 AM Osuka says:

Also, have you seen that people post in your news section here in NG? and you never put this News on frontpage? thats evidence of Fans tracking your work. So put "Eye of the Tiger.mp3" on your Music player, and finish FSM7 :D

Oct. 8, 2009 | 9:08 AM HadoukenDude responds:

Thanks man, I'm not giving up on this series.

Oct. 7, 2009 | 8:11 PM robobro says:

what is fsm what does it stand for and why isnt it in your recent submissions

Oct. 7, 2009 | 11:02 PM madness01 says:

There's a perfectly logical explaination for that. Every flash that has a sequel gets less views in the one prior to the first one because the first one is out for a longer period of time therefore the first one of the series will always get the most views

Oct. 7, 2009 | 11:15 PM QJD says:

Maybe if there wasn't such a time large gap in between episodes, more people would view.

Oct. 8, 2009 | 9:06 AM HadoukenDude responds:

Like I said, I'm not the kind of person to make episodes on a weekly or monthly basis. I got other things to focus on apart from flash. This year has been a mess for me and I'm taking my time to get things back in order.

Oct. 8, 2009 | 3:57 AM Toball01 says:

Is that really true? I wonder why? Your stuff is great in my opinion, those others are missing out on some funny stuff.

Oct. 8, 2009 | 7:53 AM lifeofmystery says:

based on your first reply to the first post, i will remind you of somthing... there were only 22 reviews for a game i LOVED that had been on the front page for almost 4 days, 22 reviews 4 days... 1 week ago... scary, its almost like newgrounds is faiding isnt it? but still, ill always be here, never switching to rising sites like kongregate N shit, always gonna be here to watch the crazy stuff newgrounds makes, you stil have most of your fans after all right?

Oct. 8, 2009 | 3:14 PM Leoknight says:

I think ur series is one of the best on Newgrounds. If u look on my page u can see 4 swordmisadventures is on of my top 4. Some people don't know what there missin. There missing a really creative and funny story. When u realese any future episodes I'll write a review about it and have my brother watch it with me. He likes ur series too. Me and my younger brother are waiting patiently for the next one. We think its one of the funniest things hes seen. So don't give up, u'll never know what will happen with the next one.

Oct. 9, 2009 | 5:44 PM Lordofdoom3 says:

Its the times dude, if you look youl see how painfully obvious it is that the people of our generation are becoming more fickle and absent minded, or pretty much stupid. I guess thing might look up after you are out of school and get your own computer.

Oct. 9, 2009 | 8:26 PM JackAttackTheLoony says:

Personally, I have nothing against spriting--flash is flash, and you definitely need skill to make a good sprite flash. There IS a difference between a good and crappy sprite flash. I'm a fan of this flash, and would like to see more of it, but I wouldn't hold it against you if you ended it. The internet can be fickle, and as a former and still occasional blabbering idiot, I know comments can grate on people.

In the end, do whatever you want, because if YOU'RE not enjoying these flashes, then what's the point of continuing?

Oct. 10, 2009 | 10:57 AM shin235 says:

Don't Know If The Prank You Pulled Off The Other You did it but i was also fooled when you posted about the nintendo rights thing but.. try to clear it out and post it in the forums or something then maybe you'll get your audience back

Oct. 10, 2009 | 7:52 PM revilnemesis says:

please don't give up on FSM it is a great series, but if you really want to stop I won't hold it against you

Oct. 10, 2009 | 8:25 PM yoyo121 says:

Right on! I mean it isn't fair granted you aren't obligated to make more nor are they obligated to watch but people do and give credit. While the credit is well it's as if they don't uphold it on how good your flashes are. Whether it's "old news" or not is not relevent. It was still good and that's what matters. They aren't good fans if they can't give your series which they supposedly liked a chance.

Oct. 10, 2009 | 11:23 PM redrocketrover says:

i dont really think its underrated but i think its great and funny. look heres some advice: If people will watch them and give judgement comments about it but if it was some one makes it as good as you then maybe i would think that but all im sayin is people will still watch them then keep makin them

Oct. 11, 2009 | 12:15 PM Doctoroliver says:

I agree. I saw the episode 6, it was awesome with a capital A. Still, it's funny that not much people thought about watching it. Still, I have a rule: I don't care much about how many people are watching the flash, as long as it is Awesome. Be grateful that users on Newgrounds saw the movie and said it's great, that's all! BTW, hope you'll manage to finish FSM 7, I'll bid you a lot of luck!

Oct. 12, 2009 | 12:59 AM hackyU says:

hey whats the matter? 161k its good. i know it is not like the prev ones but who cares... all the people who watched still like it or even more than the others... we like your stuff so continue with it =D

en serio estan bien cheveres ;).

Oct. 13, 2009 | 2:15 PM SS4FlameAlchemist says:

People just don't care about sprite movies like they used to. If it was drawn with the same content, People would be all over it. People think it is soooo easy working with sprite, when it takes all the patience you have, and then some. Seriously, I commend you for getting this far. I have been trying to get some motivation for some flashes I want to make. People don't like sprites anymore. People just bash them.

Oct. 14, 2009 | 8:18 AM HadoukenDude responds:

I'm not giving up on this project just because the overall consensus in Newgrounds is: "People hate sprite movies". That's not true.

I Still have a fanbase in and out of Newgrounds that supports me because they enjoy the way I tell the story. Sprites aren't the problem here.

I don't want to go through this topic all over again, I've already been through that bullshit before.

No offense of course.

Oct. 14, 2009 | 3:33 PM Wirgliusz says:

Oh come on! Its not even like every single person that whatches this flashes is your fan. Propably just some random day by typing some random words some random person found your flash, watch it and move on. And if you find soething and see thats episode 7 or 8 you are less likely to watch that one, rather sart from ep.1. I even have seen some serie that I was wathing without reason, and dont really liked them. I wasn't posting negative comment because it was good, but it didnt fit in my personal taste, so I watched episodes from 1 to 4 decided I had enough and simply stop wahtching. Not because nexts were worse or I disrespected author... I just stoped.
And if you have over 100k views on a movie and your score is over 4 I honestly don't know what are you ranting about.
(Sorry for mistakes I don't know this langue's gramar very well.)

Oct. 14, 2009 | 6:57 PM TenebraeUbr says:

Honestly, this was the very first NG series I ever watched on here. I have to agree tho', many people are watching them on youtube. Being busy myself, I have yet to submit any work so I know what you mean. As a kid I would have to say to just hang on to what you have. You won't know what's left until you've lost it so having a following and successful series is a great accomplishment to remember in this world. Kids these days search for realistic blood and gore instead of hilarious and simple, but innovative movies such as FSM. Really, don't cancel the series.

Oct. 14, 2009 | 9:54 PM Organous says:

Part of the problem is that there's no convenient way of alerting people when you make new stuff like Youtube does for subscribers. I barely even go to Newgrounds, but when I do, it's for exactly the kind of stuff you make. Therefore, I never really see when you make a new video.

Take care of your studies ;)

I'm new to newgrounds. The first video I saw was We are the champions with my favorite character link. I saw the list of other videos you made and, though i'm still working on it, I love your videos so far especially the links videos. I find myself watching it everyday. I enjoy your videos and find them funny with no real fault with them. I show your work with other family members and they love them too. I write reviews to ones i like mainly. The others will if they are giving advice so maybe that's why you don't get much review cause your work don't need improvement, however it's hard to say really. Peoples views are different so it's hard to say why they don't review<sigh> it's confusing sometimes.
Anyway i love your work and hope to see more of it.
Your fan,

I've been reading some of the comments left here, and some of them are just quite ridiculous! We are living really "interesting" times, if you wish to call it that, but I don't really think that it might be a reason for not watching the series! What is needed is some kind of propaganda, because, as the episodes are long and take long before they're done, I guess that reminding people of the series, and allowing more people to know about the FSM Forum should be enough to recover the audience... Start with friends and fans who like the series, and they can make chain-messages, that could help quite a bit...

Never forget that, in this world, unluckily, the average people live just to consume, and they'd rather wait for others to give them all what they want in their hands than search for anything at all... And that's right, maybe your series are just plain entertainment, but people crave to consume that nowadays!

In your first episodes (and in the other series you've developed, that's not a bad strategy), both for the newcomers who start watching this series and for the fellows who watch them over and over again, you should put any kind of advice to keep them alert about your new releases! That might help a lot, my friend!

Oct. 23, 2009 | 12:11 AM higgles says:

In my opinion I think your episodes get better as they progress in the series.
Don't leave this flash unfinished after 6 episodes, keep going!

Oct. 23, 2009 | 12:09 PM oobathorker says:

dont stop! continue the series i love this series and i dont want it to stop! i dont mean to be a bother but if you could make the seventh episode longer i would be eternelly gratefull i first watched the series and loved it but then again the episodes do come out a little long and then people lose interest and patience for waiting, maybe if you try to rush the episode more people will watch! i hope it goes well!

a HUGE fan!

Oct. 23, 2009 | 11:48 PM HadoukenDude responds:

Rushing a project is never good idea.

Zelda games are never rushed and flash projects based on it shouldn't do the same.

I am doing my best to have things settled before the end of the year, but I can't promise anything at the moment.

I will say this though, I will be including medals/easter eggs in the next episode.

i understand it's frustrating and i have watched ur vids, everyone everytime and i notice that the story seems to die from focus compared to the fights. It is nice to be interactive but the story has to play first fiddle. Every new episodes seems to go into the story less and less and that makes it lose interest!
But that just one fans opinion!

Oct. 24, 2009 | 4:47 PM SamPD says:

I believe you have may have lost your audience.
The key is that you must keep your viewers coming back for more.
Otherwise "Fuck it, I'm going to someone who actully cares about their audience
and makes his stuff on a daliy basic."
If you go on a sprite rampage, then you'll will attracte a large audience in a short period of time.

That is the key my friend. Take advantage of the situation and rack up the views.

Oct. 26, 2009 | 8:04 AM boxdude says:

Aw comeon dude. Don't feel that way about 4 swords. You may have lost some of your viewers but the ones that are still with you will be with you in the end! Keep up the good work!

I enjoy this series, unlike many others and have added a few viewers into the series. However, it's noticeable that there's more negative comments, even if the series is getting better, unlike SMBZ, which got worse in the last episode (story-wise, that is).
