Red Link: Old Vs. New. What are your thoughts?

Posted by VicHD - July 25th, 2011

Over the years I feel like I unintentionally divided the fans of Four Swords Misadventures when I replaced SpikeDaPenguin for baldboy64 for the role of Red Link. But to be perfectly clear for those still new to the series, Spike chose to quit voice acting after ep.3 and I had no choice but to find a replacement at the time, which is why baldboy64 was chosen instead.

Interestingly enough, I got a message from Spike over the weekend stating that he wanted to reprise the role due to "fan demand". This caught me completely off guard, yet it also left me with another dilemma. This time I want to know your thoughts about who's the better Red Link for FSM.

Spikedapenguin's take on the character (ep. 1-3) was that he was more Gung-ho and short tempered.

Baldboy64's take on the character (Ep. 4-7) gave him a "more bark than bite" approach with a bit of a sharp tongue.

Personally, I like both interpretations and choosing which one's best is like choosing between two of Daffy Duck's alter egos (lunatic vigilante vs. greedy glory hound). Don't give me the typical "this is YOUR series, you decide" excuse. I want to know what you guys like because I'm making this for you guys.

Either way I'm planning on having both VA's in the project somehow. I'll figure it out at some point.

On a side Note, I'm looking for someone else to help me make some original custom Zelda sprites for the episode. Anyone else willing to lend a hand? I'd appreciate the help.

Personally, I'd have to go with BaldBoy64. Don't get me wrong, Spike does an awesome job as the ever-angry Red Link, but BaldBoy's Red Link has a certain unique charm that I just enjoy more. Then again, we've not really seen much of BaldBoy's Red Link sober, almost all of his screen time has been drunk on milk. Were you to put up a new episode starring BaldBoy as a sober Red Link, that'd help with my decision. Otherwise, I'd have to say my preference is BaldBoy (Sorry Spike).

Spike, hands down. Always liked him better, but that's just personal opinion. Guess we'll wait and see.

I think Spike would be a better choice as red Link. The personality he gave suits the character better, and I know a lot of people who liked it better that way. As for the Zelda sprites, I could take a shot at it, but I don't know how well it will turn out.

Just show me what you can do.

The "more bark than bite" approach has been a lot more amusing than the typical "gung ho" mood.

Well, the new Red is definitely better, no offense to Spike. The drunk idea was also a nice twist, but as seeing Red won't be near milk for awhile, I won't care to see Spike be drunk. And I can do the sprites, hands down. I can't animate, as I've told people a million times, but art is my forte. And writing. I've also done a lot of work on these exact sprites, from Four Swords, and enjoy doing them. If you want, I cn send you some of my samples.

Sure, show me some of your samples and I'll let you know.

Red Link personality disorder?

i would somehow work them both into it and sortve reference it as red links multiple personality disorder. it be a real kick to the series.

Psssh. I gotta go with Baldboy.

Use both... Red Link can be like Gollum

-We must complete our quest
-No, we must take revenge on the saiyan cucco
-But he will kill us!!!
-Erh...And rape princess Zelda??
-YHES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go with baldboy, spike quit on you and baldboy has been here longer. Don't replace baldboy just because spike came up with and excuse to come back to such an amazing series.

or you could just make two versions of each episode and replace red link's dialogue but that would probably be too much work anyway, but at least this way everyone wins...

I would say BaldBoy64, spike quit and now wants to comeback cause of the attention the show is getting. i say tell him he missed out

I never noticed the change. When I read it at one point my thoughts were "Huh, couldn't tell"

Personally, I would go with Baldboy on this one. He brings a new type of "umph" to the table instead of having the typical red=one angry son-of-a-bitch role. I mean, no offense to Spike, of course, but he just puts the normality back into things instead of putting a spark back into the series. I also found the new Red Link to be a bit more sophisticated than the first Red, which appealed to more of the lowest common demoninator of the audience instead of catching the eye of the more elaborate viewers. The thing that bugs me the most is that, now that the series is pretty damn famous, he just wants in it now after he quit instead of sticking to the series through the years.

Yes, I would like to see Spike voice some characters that may become major ones in the future (perhaps, if there will be such a thing as "Season 2," [since he has the rough, put it all on the table type of voice] he could voice Ganon). Of course, this is in the scenario of you first getting past the whole idea of Dark Link and Vaati (think I spelled that right) with, probably, another story arc which will thus end the fight between the four Links and the main evil characters so far.

Well, that's my input. Hope that it at least helped a little bit.

maybe you can have them both record the same line so it would be easier for some people to decide
personally I never noticed the difference but I say baldboy64 since Spike quit on you he might do it again

Though I liked both interpretations, I felt that baldboy64 portrayed the character only slightly better. Either way, I would love to see Spikedapenguin return to the series as another character.

My personal opinion and vote would be for Baldboy64. Yeah Red Link is a bit of a coward now but that cowardice, the bark and bite routine, really gives him a humerous edge (The whole Super Cucco fight shows that) and I really love how he portrayed Red Link being drunk.

My point is though is that this is based around humor instead of fight fight action so Baldboy64 would, more or less, be the best choice for Red Link.

If you are going to add Spikedapenguin again you could always add another character into it. Ganondorf maybe. Hell maybe even an enemy soldier who's there mostly for wit and is a runner on the first sign of trouble.

You know one of "Those" minions.

But yeah that's my expressed opinion and thoughts man. Add another enemy for him to voice act or a funny doesn't die minion. Because Baldboy64 is the best choice for Red Link.

No offense to you of course Spikedapenguin.

I personally preferred SpikeDaPenguin's take on Red Link. I found him to be very entertaining to watch and he added to the group dynamic better. No offense to Baldboy64, because I think he did a good job, I just prefer Spike's Red Link. I will say that Baldboy did do a fantastic job with Red Link when he was drunk.

I think both actors were good; however, I'd have to go with the majority with this one: BaldBoy is definitely better for humor (and that's what this series is focusing on, right?). Plus, Spike obviously has "better" things to do, since he quit on you in the first place. However, giving him a different role wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

I have to go with BaldBoy, just because we have barely seen his version of Link sober, like someone said earlier.
