Posting flash due dates, a good or bad thing?

Posted by VicHD - April 13th, 2008

NOTE: Before I start this topic, I would like to say that the earlier post was an April Fools joke. I was just having a little fun with you guys, yet I found it amusing that some of you would take this stuff seriously, and on April 1st. Relax people, there will be a Four Swords 5 real soon.

Now about today's topic:

Ever since Four Swords started getting popular, I always get the infamous question:"When is episode ___ coming out?" I understand that users are getting hyped over what could happen next, but I prefer not to reveal due dates. Why you ask? I don't want to look bad making false promises. I prefer to work on my stuff until I feel that a flash is ready. Also, I want to keep it as a surprise by posting it when you least expect it.

Take FSM ep.4 for example. At first I thought it would be OK to at least let people know that I'll post the flash in a certain month (I let people know on youtube about it). But for me, things don't always go as planned. I'll give you 2 reasons why.

1. I'm not on the computer all the time.
2. The voice actors that work with me aren't available everyday.

When I give users a due date and don't fulfill it, I'll make people mad at me for something that's completely beyond my control. I don't want that.

Remember guys, you're dealing with a small group of people in a series who are dedicating what they have left of their free time to come up with something new. Most users here don't have their own animation studios, we aren't working round the clock to get things done, we aren't exactly getting paid to make this stuff (not counting the monthly contests) and lastly, Newgrounds is not exactly your typical Cable TV station, it's a freakin' website.

Things work differently here compared to what you see on TV. Flash authors only make their stuff for fun when they get their ideas sorted out. I know some of you get desperate for the next episode all the time. Some are crazy enough to give out death threats like "make another one or I'll kill you" (true story). But in the end, you need to give a person time, we have lives too you know. If we rush things, we know exactly who to blame.

Anyway, my point is, why bother to give out a due date when the NG private messaging system will automatically inform you that your favorite author just posted a new flash? Simply live your own life and wait for that message to arrive. When you get the message (or notice the flash in the portal), that's when you should stop asking and watch the damn thing.

Chill people, you'll see the next part soon. it's not like I make a new flash every week you know.

Well, that's pretty much it.

When is episode 5 coming out?

HAHAHAH forget it, im joking hahahahaha

Si q eres un maldito, pana.
jajajaja XD

let's hope at least THAT will get through their thick skulls then..

I like posting them just to have a goal to work towards

However, I got drenched in uni work and my latest flash is technically two months 'late', but I've changed the date to 'sometime in May' now lol.

well spoken :)

I never give due dates cause I never keep them

Sometimes is not good to have due dates, creates more stress

A example the due day for DREAM THIEVES was MAY16th, because was the birthday of the singer Tony Kakko. And i calculated that i needed to animate 5 seconds all the days to complete it for the due date, but some days for the homework, i only animated 3 or 2 seconds at day and thats delayed me, only i recover that time on some weekends. I was really streesed and when i finished dream thieves i was so tired of flash that i had 6 months without animating :(

some tips:
-dont rush, take your time, is better for your health
-dont use due dates, that will stress you more
-if you dont have the voice acting file, try working on some things with the resources that you have, and when you have the audio file, just add it and all happy
-Dont care about the people who is aswing you the due date of the next episode, that will stress you more, i received a lot of messages asking for another video whit the song WHITE PEARLS BLACK OCEANS and that stressed me a bit because i dont know when i can work on that

las cosas salen cuando tengan que salir, no tengas estress, y todo de pinga
saludos mi pana

wat until you actually have it finished, then release a date :D other wise youll fuck urself trying to get it done :P

Posting due dates is good, if you can live up to them. Otherwise I always answer the question of "When is _____ coming out?" with a description of where I am in the project (writing script, storyboarding, or whatever).

The question is something fans ask because they are interested in your work. It's not about the date it's released, it's about feeling close to your work. If you can let them in on your process, that's usually enough to keep everyone happy.

*Gets up from seat and claps violently* Bravo! Bravo! It was-a thing of beauty! Gratzi, Gratzi mon ami! Ok, I can't speak Italian for shimolions, But I know an author who knows his prioritys. Congratualions on "Sticking it to the people!" Your the MAN!
By the way...when's five coming out?

:D :D :D :D :D :D
The Review Maniac.

P.S. Kidding.

Sorry, but Please Hury!

Dude you're totally right, every 10 in 10 days, i go to Newgrounds to see any messages. Also you're right because the voice acthors arent allways avaible, thay also have a life, so some of this guys dont even think about that ( Not every1, some know that, i mean the guys that dont allways think ). Good luck on you're work, and keep the good series success ; )

I dont like to post the NAMES OF MY FLASHES. but most of the times I put dates so people know. then I release to give an element of SUPRISE haha.

oye vamos a trabajar juntos en sprite tv 3?

Sprite TV 3?Claro, con mucho Gusto.

Hey ur going to do Sprite TV 3? cool!!

That's right. I'll be making something new for that collab too.

I totally get what you're saying. Don't put a date unless you know something won't come along and screw things up. Looking forward to #5, tho! :D

no kidding roaltyx by the way you rock

I totally agree with you, I'm also sick of seeing people ask when the next episodes comes out. They must wait patiently, if it does not appear, too bad!

Same happened with Super Mario Bros Z. Many people say when is part 7 coming? They can stop asking, because Alvin stopped working on it, but they still keep asking.

As again, I totally agree with you.

Actually, Alvin reconsidered continuing ep. 7, but he will be removing all of his contacts to prevent noobs from asking him the same questions over and over.

That, and the following installments of SMBZ will take longer than before since he has a life to deal with.

I read it in the VGlan.com forums.

I have to say that Loz mis adventure was worth the wait so I won't say when it will be out and when is the old red voice actor of red coming back not to be mean to the new voice actor.

Im agree with you.Same happened with Super Mario Bros Z. Many people say when is part 7 coming? They can stop asking, because Alvin stopped working on it, but they still keep asking.
