How nitpicky are you as a critic?

Posted by VicHD - December 1st, 2009

I've noticed over the years that are two notable types of critics these days in and out of NG: the ones who enjoy someone's work for what it is and the ones who are aggressively constructive critics. I had may share of both.

But I must ask one thing. How Nit-picky can you get, people? There's always some A-hole that points out an imperfection no matter how big or small it is. I don't mind it every now and then,I do it too, but often it gets annoying when you're trying to please a specific audience.

When it comes to a person's work, critics would complain about stuff like for example the animation qualiy, the sound quality, spelling mistakes (damn you grammar Nazis!) audio & video editing and even the main plot. Why do people insist in searching for imperfections all the time?

People,we're humans! We make mistakes! It's part of our nature! We're not robots. Why do we strive for perfection all the time? Nobody's perfect in everything unless you're God and even he has imperfections, depending on how you look at it of course.

I understand that's the purpose of a critic, but do they really have to dig that deep just because something isn't to their liking? What ever happened to suspension of disbelief? Come to think of it, I'm being nit-picky myself just mentioning this stuff.

Do you go overboard as a nit-picky critic or do you prefer to accept things the way an author intended it to be? This question is simply out of curiosity of course.
What do you guys think?

It depends on what I think of the submission compared to the score. I'm not above being a massive Brackenwood fanboy, but if Egofucktard's latest defecation has a 4.6 when I feel that it should go a Hell of a lot lower, I can get nitpicky. And every time I deliver a low review (which I rarely do anymore, due to laziness), I make sure to hit a bit harder while still being as helpful as possible. Everyone should nitpick if they think a movie is overrated, though for a normal author it's usually too harsh of criticism.

As a Critic, I'm probably a little softer and nicer than I should be.
gotta get better at breaking peoples hearts and dreams >:)

i'm not, if i find something wrong with or something odd i'll point it out, but the lowest score iv'e ever givin a Flash was a 7 i think

"unless you're God and even he has imperfections, depending on how you look at it of course"

Have you ever read the little thing called a Bible?

It explains He IS perfect.

Anyways, I don't wanna start a flame war here... so here's some stuff also:

People like to find the bad stuff, because they want to not see anything as being perfect.

I mentioned God as an example because everyone has an opinion about his origins and people like to find contradictions about everything. Most of the time it's a matter of Science vs. Religion, that's what I've read.

All that aside, I still believe that there is a God. I'm Roman Catholic after all and I'm open to other people's opinions.

just dont pay attention to the bothersome ones thats all

Based on how I could do it better in theory.

I could say that in FSMA the animation is low-quality if I wanted to, but I sure don't know how to do it better... because they're only ... talking, yeah. there's not much to animate about it.

then again, if( IF! ) they got something to improve and tell you that - why not? but you gotta distinguish between taste-based things like humor and other things like sound-quality (idk that's the best i could think of xD)

hope that all was understandable, cause when i double-checked i really got confused what i meant to say ._.

from what i see on critic stuff. it is based on how people think and look on it.It gets twisted by how people want things to how people want it done to there standers, aka people like it for what it is or people who want it done their way. there are even those who just want to see perfection for what they enjoy. all in all we all are different and that is what makes critics.
my example is the people who want the zelda series into a movie.lots of critics there cause of one thing i see a problem of, should link talk? i am amazed at how that one thing makes or brakes the idea.
anyway if i confused ya i am sorry. but like you said "we're humans."

For me, it depends on how I look at things. I have been both in my reviews. I don't like being critical, but at times I am. It just depends.

I personally agree with the God not being perfect. I mean I believe in him but if you read the bible he seriously gets way to angry at his own creations that are not perfect. I mean we get a little out of hand and then he floods the earth. He killed an entire guys family for a test of his faith which was way overbored. Anyway thats a few examples of what I think to be an imperfect God though I myself do believe in one. Back to the discussion I would just say its human nature to be mean and evil just how its our nature to be loving and caring. Its two sides of a coin and humankind ends up with both.

Good answer.

I say that A-holes are A-holes and you should just ignore them.

im not but 4 swords misadventures is grrreat

Your correct. I critic too but it depends on how much I like or dislike it. But I don't bash it like it's something like Twilight or George W. Bush. It's just your perspective. But still your right about that critics sometimes go to far.

I'd rather accept the way the author made it to be I'll only give a horrible review if it is horrible. I find that when people make mistakes I just let em pass. Even when people make bad flashes and that I don't slap em across the face and kick em while they're down I say what they have mistaken then say a few things to help em in the future. Everybody makes mistakes you, me, the guy under the apple tree (gravity sucks don't it?). Mainly what I'm saying is Mistakes happen.

I feel the same F****** way about that

I think you are right, some people are so anal about this type of thing, that they have to critisize even the smallest of details, come on people, why can't you just enjoy what you are seeing.

Agreed

if i don't like a flash, i base my review on quality, not content. (unless it's a collection of cancer and 9/11 jokes(which i have seen!))

Personally I just say what I think. if I find something wrong I will say. Depending on how major it is I will alter my rating accordingly. For example, if I find some spelling mistakes and I can still understand what is being said, I don't care and I still give the rating the flash, not the grammer deserves. I may mention it sure, as everyone should aim for perfection. If I find a script thats entirely broken however and I can barely understand whats being said, then the flash in question gets a very low score and I still mention it. I think that alot of people take this attitude, some just take it far too far.

I accept things as an author intends it to be.

I dont care what score the movie gets, i give it a score on how i like it!

Well, seeing as how humans are attracted to symmetrical features of the face, thus, we are always striving for perfection. Sure, I'll point out some bad areas, but I try to find helpful suggestions overall for your submissions and whatnot. I also agree with what SoulMaster says. Most of the time, my reviews are high marks, I'm a guy who can laugh at some of the silliest things. I like a lot of things, hence why I rarely give a low score on my reviews.

Take Foamy for example:

IllWill has Foamy say pretty much everything I want to but can't because it's not conducive for acting in public, but I can still give my own examples of why it is sometimes good to be critical. Also, if no one is constantly critical of another's work, then how would that one person's work get better? It's a cycle Victor. If the cycle were to be broken, then we would not have any of the structural advancements we have today. Nor would we have ever made it out of Medieval Times and into the Renaissance. We would still be potentially royally fucked the world over if it hadn't been for people criticizing someone else's work.

I think that sums it up pretty well.

/thread :P

P.S.

CAN'T WAIT FOR 4 SWORDS EPISODE 7!!!!
